Schmiedestraße 13 30159 Hannover Tel: 0511 - 365 95-0 Fax: 0511 - 325 741 http://www.brauhaus.net/englisch/index.html
Hannover's most famous brewpub is the Ernst August Brauhaus, and famous it
is. They claim to be the most successful privately owned brewpub in the world,
and that may not be off the mark. The pub seats (hold your breath) 1,000 people
- yet I could not find a place to stand even on a weekday. The place positively
throbs with life. There's live music, dancing and plenty of their beer, called
(what else) Hanöversch. The place is open almost all the time - 8am-3am, and
5am on weekends everyday.
The menu card is in English, the waitresses friendly and the food substantial. Prices are reasonable; inexpensive breakfasts and lunches, moderate dinners (DM50-70 per head for drinks and dinner). Beer is orderable by the pint or the cask - and a beautiful traditional cask it is too. Hanöversch is a clear light lager with lots of head and a nice crisp refreshing taste that you can drink in forever. There are many sections to this place. To the right as you enter is a sixty cover café section - a brightly lit place meant mainly for eating. The real action is left of the entrance, in the main Brauhaus with subdued lighting, wooden benches, dancing area, performance stage and hundreds of people getting drunk. Getting there is easy...its walking distance from the main train station (Hauptbanhof) though Kröpcke, Markethalle and Steintor stations are close. Its also very close to most of the major malls. The official address is Schmiedestrasse 13, but ask and ye shall receive directions. Go early, go in a group, sit in front of the band and don't come out until 5am.
